At PMI Arizona, our volunteers are the heartbeat of our chapter—and few embody that spirit quite like Olena Miziak, our Exceptional Chapter Volunteer Award recipient.

Olena joined PMI just a year and a half ago. As she pursued her PMP certification, she discovered the PMI Arizona Chapter and saw volunteering not only as a way to give back, but as a meaningful opportunity to connect, learn, and acclimate to a new professional and cultural community. In March 2025, she stepped into her volunteer role, and she’s been making an impact ever since.

As Membership Services Project Manager, Olena has played a key role in strengthening how our chapter connects with members. From improving member communications and event announcements to supporting networking opportunities and Fusion Event presentations, her work helps ensure our members feel informed, supported, and genuinely cared for. She has also represented PMI as a PMI Global onsite volunteer, further extending her service beyond the chapter.

What makes Olena’s contributions especially powerful is why she volunteers. She finds joy in seeing members recognize that the chapter is invested in their careers and growth—and in return, volunteering has helped her build a strong professional network and feel welcomed in her new community.

When asked what she would say to members considering volunteering, Olena doesn’t hesitate:

She believes volunteering is one of the best ways to share your professional journey, receive support, and give back in a meaningful way.

Beyond her impressive professional commitment, Olena brings heart and humanity to everything she does. She considers herself a calm and balanced person, she’s passionate about project management, believes you should love what you do, and draws inspiration from everyday people who show resilience in extraordinary circumstances. She’s an avid baker, a lifelong traveler at heart, and cares deeply about her home country, Ukraine.

Her colleagues describe her simply—and perfectly—as “strict but fair.”

Olena’s personal motivation is clear: her family and personal values guide and inspire her dedication to meaningful work and the initiatives she cares about.

Christina Samore has been a PMI member since 2019 and joined the Phoenix Chapter in 2020. She began volunteering with the Chapter in February 2025 as the Breakfast Meetings Producer on the Programs Team. Christina was drawn to volunteering after keeping an eye on opportunities that aligned with her professional experience, particularly her background producing an internal virtual conference at work. Having already attended and enjoyed the Chapter’s Breakfast Meetings, she saw this role as a perfect fit. This year, Christina has supported both the Breakfast Meetings and an ASU Speaker Event, finding the experience especially rewarding through the connections she’s built with speakers and other volunteers and Chapter members. She enjoys the opportunity for one‑on‑one interaction and the chance to learn from engaging presentations while collaborating with fellow members.

Known by colleagues as detail‑driven with a great sense of humor, Christina brings both structure and creativity to everything she does. Her personal philosophy—don’t say “no,” ask “how”—guides her approach to problem‑solving and has led to impactful outcomes in her professional career, including uncovering key problems in a major multi‑year project and realigning it to be successful. Outside of work and volunteering, Christina is passionate about art museums, travel (Spain being a favorite destination), and giving back through causes such as Andre House, Feed My Starving Children, and St. Mary’s Food Bank. Whether proudly project‑managing her own wedding or completing a writing challenge to write 50,000 words in a single month, Christina is inspired by leaving things better than she found them. She shares a simple message for those considering volunteering: “Do it— it will be the most rewarding decision you will make; the connections are invaluable!

Zackery Hyham has been a dedicated PMI member for two years and began volunteering with the PMI Phoenix Chapter one year ago, currently serving as Finance Project Manager and Acting Director of Treasury. Inspired by a deep belief in community-driven growth and the transformative power of PMI’s mission, Zack jumped into volunteer service to help others while expanding his own leadership journey. Within the Finance team, Zack has played a key role in financial operations and governance, contributing to the financial strategic planning for the 2026 transition into the new PMI Arizona Chapter. His impact extends beyond PMI, including organizing hygiene kits and diaper donation drives with the Kiwanis Club, offering pro bono consulting to the Arizona Historical Society, and mentoring youth through DeMolay.
Zack finds fulfillment in seeing the tangible outcomes of his volunteer work — from supporting families in need to improving financial transparency and empowering future leaders. He describes volunteering as one of the best investments in both career and character and encourages others to get involved with PMI to grow personally and professionally. Known for his passion, love of cats and Pokémon, and ever-growing Lava Lamp collection, Zack brings a unique energy to every initiative. He’s inspired by the potential in others and driven by causes that blend history, science, and community impact. Whether he's playing late-night strategy games or lecturing on efficiency, Zack’s commitment to making the world better — one project at a time — is truly exceptional.

      

Sheri Palmer, Elections Manager for the PMI Phoenix Chapter, has been a dedicated PMI member since 2005 and stepped into her volunteer role in 2025. Inspired by a desire to give back and connect with others, Sheri took on the challenge of managing the 2025 elections for the newly formed Arizona Chapter. Her passion for project management and its transformative impact on both personal and professional outcomes shines through in her work. Sheri finds the most rewarding part of volunteering to be the new connections she’s made and the opportunity to collaborate with others who share her enthusiasm for the field. Her advice to new members? “It’s never too late. Even a little bit can help. Working with others allows you to do great things when you come together.”

Lead by example,” is reflected in her approach to both life and work. She’s passionate about health, kindness, and continuous growth, and she’s driven by a desire to be the best human she can be. Whether she’s reading mystery novels, volunteering with at-risk children, or planning her next national park visit, Sheri brings energy, compassion, and a goal-driven mindset to everything she does. Thomas Gunther has been a PMI Phoenix Chapter member for just one year, but his impact has already been felt across the Academic Outreach landscape. As Director of University Outreach, Thomas has led and organized PMI events at Arizona State University, mentored emerging project managers, and worked diligently to strengthen relationships with universities throughout Arizona. His commitment to inspiring future Arizonans and serving the community is at the heart of his volunteerism. Thomas brings a strong leadership mindset to his work, focusing on building connections and empowering others to take initiative and grow.

He encourages new members to be strategic in their volunteer efforts and not to be intimidated by experience or age. Thomas is passionate about mentoring others and believes in creating a supportive environment where volunteers can learn, challenge one another, and eventually take on leadership roles themselves. Outside of PMI, Thomas tutors individuals with Down Syndrome, helping them build independence through reading, math, and life skills. With over 20 years in the airline industry and more than 50 countries visited, he enjoys travel, especially to his favorite destinations, Singapore and Rio de Janeiro. Passionate about environmentalism, immigration, and equal rights, Thomas believes in living sustainably and supporting the communities we serve. His colleagues describe him as a good listener, fair, and detail-oriented—someone who may seem intimidating at first but quickly reveals a fun and approachable nature. And yes, he still plans to skydive one day!

Since joining PMI in May 2024, Elsa (Yunkai) Hsu has made an immediate and inspiring impact on the Pro-fessional Development team. Stepping into her volunteer role as Project Manager for the Project Man-agement Tool Academy, Elsa quickly became a driving force behind innovative programming. Her journey began at the AZ PM Summit 2024, where after learning more about Project Management, she realized there was an opportunity to get involved and signed up for the speaker team to learn more about project management and to connect with experts in the field. Elsa participated on a panel as part of the day’s Key-note to bring in her project management perspectives as an early career professional. Her team has also partnered with leading project management tool vendors to host sessions that empower members to ex-plore new tools. Now, they’re working to launch a dynamic tool library, giving members on-demand access to learn project management tools anytime.

Elsa’s passion for learning and connecting with others shines through in everything she does. She shares, “The most rewarding part has been meeting and learning from the incredible talents in the field.” A multi-lingual globetrotter who speaks five languages and has visited over 20 countries, Elsa brings a global per-spective and a human-centered approach to her work. Whether she’s playing badminton, diving into sci-fi novels like Percy Jackson, or dreaming of watching the Aurora Borealis, Elsa lives by the motto: “Choose fear over regret” and “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great!” Her advice to new volunteers? Volunteering does take extra time and effort, but the learning and networking are in-valuable. There are so many hidden opportunities within PMI—from experiencing different industries through events to gaining skills outside of your day-to-day work. We’re proud to have Elsa as part of our Chapter and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next!

We are honored to recognize Sonia Kissel, Social Impact Program Manager, as an Exceptional Chapter Volunteer for her remarkable dedication and leadership within the PMI Phoenix Chapter.

Since joining the Chapter in August 2024, Sonia has consistently demonstrated a passion for service and community engagement. Her initiative in organizing the St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen Prep event not only brought volunteers together but also showcased how project management skills can be applied to real-world challenges. Thanks to her coordination, the team exceeded expectations—preparing a second meal ahead of schedule due to their efficiency. Sonia also contributed her time and energy to Pat’s Run, further reinforcing her commitment to making a meaningful impact through volunteerism.

Sonia’s contributions extend beyond logistics and planning—she brings a thoughtful, inclusive approach to everything she does. Passionate about writing and public health, she believes in seeing the world through multiple perspectives and using her talents to drive change. Her proudest career moment, becoming an entrepreneur and publishing a book, reflects her creativity and determination. With a Korean name that means “bringing people together,” Sonia truly embodies the spirit of unity and collaboration that defines our Chapter. Her colleagues describe her as inclusive and collaborative, and her advocacy for causes like children’s welfare and education makes her a role model for all. We are thrilled to recognize Jessica Moure as an Exceptional Chapter Volunteer!

Since joining the PMI Phoenix Chapter just 10 months ago, Jessica has made a remarkable impact through her role as the Women in Project Management Lead within the DEI Committee. Her journey into volunteering began at the Los Angeles PMI Global Summit, where a chance encounter with passionate volunteers sparked a desire to get involved. That moment of connection stayed with her, and she knew she wanted to be part of a community that shared her values and drive. Since then, Jessica has taken on key roles, including recruiting speakers for our Breakfast Meetings, supporting the Board Elections Nominations Committee, and championing initiatives that empower women in project management.

Jessica’s dedication stems from a deep desire to bring the “human touch” back into her professional life—something she missed while working remotely. Volunteering has allowed her to build meaningful relationships and blend her personal warmth with professional excellence. A former university professor in Venezuela, Jessica fondly recalls teaching her younger brother with white chalk on their closet door—an early sign of her natural gift for making complex ideas easy to understand. Her multicultural journey through Venezuela, Mexico, and the U.S., along with her experience working for a Chinese company, has given her a rich global perspective and an ability to connect across cultures. Her motto, “Where there’s a challenge, there’s an opportunity,” perfectly captures her fearless approach to problem-solving and her passion for taking on the seemingly impossible.

Ken has been a dedicated member of PMI for over 13 years and began his volunteer journey in 2021 after retiring. Driven by a desire to stay engaged and give back to the project management, STEM, and greater Phoenix communities, Ken took on the role of Director of our new Mentorship Program and was instrumental in the program’s growth and maturation. Particularly rewarding for him is seeing Mentor-Mentee progress highlighted during our Mentorship Graduations, where members celebrate successful connections and progress made by both mentees and mentors during each cohort. Additionally, Ken has found a rewarding role in the Chapter’s Social Impact initiatives, such as collecting coats and donations for the One-Warm-Coat drive and helping at our local food banks. He encourages new members and those considering volunteer work to take advantage of the numerous opportunities offered by our Chapter and grow with us on this journey.

Ken emphasizes the importance of networking with top project managers in the state and improving one's skills and knowledge. He believes in the power of giving back and supporting the profession, quoting, "What we have done for ourselves alone goes with us when we leave this life; what we have done for others, and the world, remains and is immortal." His passion for STEM, leadership, social justice, giving back and personal interests such as cycling, swimming, hiking, and handyman projects on his historic home in mid-town Phoenix, further exemplify his commitment to continuous learning and community involvement. Ken's hidden talent lies in his enthusiasm for STEM, where he has presented science concepts and live demos to middle-school and elementary school classes, judged science fair entries, and attended lectures at Cal-Tech, Mount Wilson Observatory, and the NASA-Jet Propulsion Labs.

Ken's dedication extends beyond his volunteer work. He is passionate about family, faith, leadership, and social justice. During his time off, he enjoys visiting destinations like Bellagio, Italy, Southern Germany, and family in Colorado and on the East Coast. His guilty pleasure is Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream from Tillamook Creamery. Ken's business philosophy revolves around developing a long-term strategy, focusing on quality results, and continuous learning and improvement. He is inspired by his heroes, including his parents, grandparents, and family members who supported him throughout his career and particularly after a near fatal cycling-triathlon accident in 2014. Ken's proudest career moments include saving lives through key pharmaceutical and medical product developments along with manufacturing process developments for biological therapies. He is especially proud of his team winning the United Kingdoms’ - Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement. His personal motto, "Noblesse Oblige," reflects his belief in the responsibility to give back and help others.

Bruce Schwickrath has been a cornerstone of PMI for 24 years, showcasing exceptional dedication and leadership across various roles and chapters. His PMI journey began in 2005 as a Chapter Event Speaker for another chapter, and he quickly rose through the ranks to become their VP of Programs, Chapter Secretary, and Chapter President. Bruce's unwavering commitment to the PMI community shines through his extensive volunteer work, including his contributions to the PMBOK 5th Edition and the Consulting Community of Practice (CoP).

In May 2024, he joined the Phoenix Chapter as the Director of Mentorship Programs, underscoring his passion for professional development and mentoring. This year, Bruce has been at the forefront of rolling out the Mentoring Clinic series and launching Mentoring Cohort 5, generously sharing his 40 years of project management expertise with chapter members. He firmly believes that volunteering is a fantastic way to learn new methods and skills, and he encourages new members to dive in for recognition and growth. Bruce's calm demeanor under pressure and his deep understanding of project management processes make him a revered leader and mentor within the PMI community.

Beyond his professional achievements, Bruce loves unwinding at the beach, especially in the Caribbean, and indulging in his guilty pleasure of working outdoors at home, when it is cooler. He thrives on the challenge of solving complex problems and is inspired by those who say something that can't be done. Colleagues describe him as a team leader who values discussion and collaboration. His personal motto, "Work at something you love to do and never work another day in your life," perfectly captures his dedication to his career and his belief in finding joy in one's work.

Dr. Brent Scholar, Ed.D., PMP, PMI-ACP, GPM-b, has been an invaluable member of the PMI community since February 2024. His dedication to volunteerism began in September 2024, driven by a call for volun-teers and his inherent desire to give back. As the DEI Guidelines Project Manager, PMI-ACP Study Group Project Manager, and PMP Study Group Facilitator, Brent has significantly contributed to the creation of DEI guidelines and the facilitation of study groups. His efforts have been instrumental in supporting the success of others and the organizations that have supported him. Brent finds immense reward in seeing others succeed and encourages new members to volunteer, emphasizing the opportunity to interact with great people and continue learning.

Beyond his professional achievements, Brent is a passionate traveler with a hidden talent for cooking. His favorite destination is Bali, though he has many other favorites. He enjoys Chompies’ Rainbow Layer Cook-ies as a guilty pleasure and is currently reading the CAPM All-In-One Textbook and a book from Piers An-thony's Xanth Fantasy Series. Brent’s proudest career moment was leaving a job due to ethical concerns, and his proudest personal moment was earning his Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership. Inspired by his wife, Jillian, and their cats, he is driven by a personal motto to enjoy the little moments. Colleagues describe him as loyal, empathetic, strategic, and dependable, and he aspires to visit all seven continents. Brent is also passionate about causes such as Achilles International, the Foundation Fighting Blindness, and blood/platelet donations. He encourages everyone to donate blood/platelets and to donate for cancer research and treatment.

Carmen Blackmore has been a dedicated member of PMI since 2023 and began her volunteer journey in 2024. Motivated by a strong desire to serve her community and build meaningful connections within PMI, Carmen has actively participated in outreach efforts, coordinated events, and supported member engagement activities across the Chapter. Her role as Director of the Community Outreach and Remote Engagement Team has allowed her to see firsthand the impact of her work, especially in connecting and supporting project managers in remote areas. Carmen finds the relationships built through her volunteer service to be incredibly rewarding, as each connection strengthens the chapter's inclusivity and sense of community.

Beyond her professional contributions, Carmen is passionate about empowering her community through mentorship and leadership development. She enjoys geocaching and outdoor navigation, with New Zealand being her favorite destination due to its breathtaking landscapes and welcoming spirit. Carmen's guilty pleasure is boba tea, and she finds joy in its simple delight. Her business philosophy centers on building authentic connections through genuine listening, which she believes is the foundation of lasting success. Inspired by figures like Michelle Obama and her sister, Carmen strives to be a connector, helping others flourish and reach their potential. Her proudest career moment was launching a spouse mentorship program for military families. In fact, she was featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show for her work supporting military families. She dreams of living abroad with her family and writing a book. Her personal motto is "Anticipate the best, prepare for the unexpected, and welcome the delightful surprises.

Alyssa Crowe joined the PMI Phoenix Chapter and began volunteering in September 2024, driven by networking opportunities and a desire to foster a sense of community around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). As a DEI Committee member, she contributes to monthly culture and calendar updates and Women in Project Management events, enjoying the chance to create a more inclusive environment. Alyssa encourages new members to volunteer, highlighting the benefits of building connections, professional growth, and making a meaningful impact.

Professionally, Alyssa is a Marketing Operations Manager in higher education. Her business philosophy includes focusing on students, using data for decisions, building cross-functional partnerships, staying flexible, striving for continuous improvement, leading with integrity, and maintaining ethical standards. Her proudest career achievement is earning her PMP certification.

Outside of work, Alyssa has a talent for movie, music, and pop culture trivia. She loves Oʻahu, Hawaii, for its relaxing beaches and vibrant plant life. Passionate about reptile wildlife conservation, mindfulness, and human rights advocacy, she finds "Self-Talk for a Calmer You" by Beverly D. Flaxington grounding and empowering. Inspired by her mother's strength, Alyssa is driven by positive progression, problem-solving, and the inspiring stories of others.

🌟Volunteer Spotlight: Aroet Hale🌟
Aroet Hale (Aro) has been a PMI member for about a year and started volunteering around ten months ago. Inspired by another volunteer he met at an ASU event, Aro decided to get involved in volunteer work. As the Programs Event Coordinator for the Programs team, he has been actively engaged in planning, finding locations, and helping execute the Phoenix Fusion events, as well as participating in various ASU and other events. Aro finds it rewarding to get involved and meet people from diverse backgrounds and industries within the Chapter. He encourages new members or those considering volunteer work for the Chapter to dive in, as the experience is both fun and worthwhile. He believes the value gained from volunteering far outweighs any sacrifices made.

In his professional life, Aro's business philosophy is simple: work hard. He looks up to his parents as his heroes for their exemplary hard work and dedication. Aro's proudest career moment was earning his degree in organizational leadership and project management, while his proudest personal moment was the birth of his son last February, with another child due in April. Aro is passionate about his family, considering them a significant and important part of his life. Aro's hidden talent is playing pickleball, and he is quite skilled at it. His favorite destination is Zermatt in Switzerland, a charming, car-free city near the Matterhorn. Driven by a desire to make a difference in the world, he cares deeply about mental health awareness and helping those in need. Aro enjoys 'board' sports like skateboarding, longboarding, surfboarding, and snowboarding. His colleagues describe him as hardworking, chill, and laid-back, yet always getting the job done. Before he dies, Aro hopes to complete the Seven Summits.

Aro lives by the motto: “In worrying, you suffer twice.” Wise words from an exceptional volunteer!

David Carnell has been a dedicated member of PMI for approximately 14 years and began his volunteer journey in September 2022. His motivation to volunteer stemmed from a desire to support members and others pursuing their PMP certification. As a Study Group Facilitator for the Credential Study Group, David has been actively involved in the PMP Study Group this year, helping members gain the confidence to take the test and earn their PMP. He finds it incredibly rewarding to see members succeed and achieve their goals. David encourages new members or those considering volunteer work for the Chapter to get in-volved, as it is a great way to give back to the PMP community and help build the chapter. He believes that volunteering not only benefits others but also provides personal growth and satisfaction.

David's guilty pleasure is watching (and talking about!) movies. His hidden talent is his expertise as a technical writer, with over thirty years of experience in the field, which aligns with his passion for improving project management processes. In his professional life, David's business philosophy revolves around leading by example, providing support to team members, and mentoring them to be able to replace him. He admires his former Army officer colleagues who served over 20 years, leading and mentoring their subordinates. David's proudest career moment was receiving his JD and MBA degrees concurrently from Arizona State University, and his proudest personal moment was being commissioned as a Medical Service Corps officer in the US Army. He is driven by the desire to do the best job possible in the most timely and efficient manner and is inspired by the opportunity to make a positive impact.

Michelle Bergquist has been a dedicated PMI member and volunteer project manager with the Marketing Team since May 2024. Michelle was drawn to volunteer work by her desire to contribute her time and develop professionally. Since her day job involves interpersonal management, the opportunity to engage in marketing content management as a PMI volunteer allowed her to explore her creative side by writing social media posts on LinkedIn, creating the weekly newsletter, and participating in marketing strategy and planning. Michelle has enjoyed tremendous networking and professional development opportunities by working closely with other volunteers and board members, finding the community to be welcoming and inclusive. Michelle encourages new members or those considering volunteer work to give it a try, even if they are not experts in their area of interest. She believes that volunteering is what you make of it—you get what you put in. By taking on opportunities to participate, people can showcase their abilities, which can lead to more opportunities.

Michelle relayed her proudest career achievement was refusing to allow a career setback define her, when in 2019 she was let go, while pregnant, from a new job in a foreign country: Within three months she se-cured a fantastic new job and ended up obtaining her CAPM certification just two days welcoming her daughter. This experience taught her the power of resilience and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. Five years later, her 5-year-old confirms her hidden talent is that she has also learned to make the best waffles! This “can do” attitude has led to Michelle to learn how to ski in her late 30’s and to climb the summit of Mt. Washington, NH in the middle of winter – even though her favorite destination is London. Passionate about family and friends, Michelle values having a local tribe, especially after moving around a lot. Her business philosophy is to be nice and work with nice people, as the work will come and go, but the kindness of people will be remembered.

Matthew McNulty has been a dedicated member of PMI for eight years and began his volunteer journey in 2022 as a PMP Study Group Facilitator within the Professional Development team. Matthew has found immense satisfaction sharing his knowledge and connecting with aspiring PMPs by facilitating study groups and participating in the AZ PM Summit. Matthew encourages new PMI Phoenix Chapter members to volunteer, emphasizing that giving back is a fantastic way to expand one's network and stay updated with the latest knowledge to improve yourself professionally. Matthew's proudest career moment was seeing his design work displayed at Sky Harbor and Mesa Gateway airports. He is passionate about doing good work and collaborating with great people, and he lives by the business philosophy of "Measure twice, cut once."

Beyond his professional and volunteer commitments, Matthew has a hidden talent for cooking, ranging from BBQ to fancy dishes. His favorite destination is the Lee’s Ferry/Vermillion Cliffs area, a place he often thinks about despite having many places left to visit. Interestingly, his guilty pleasure is spoiling the plot of films and TV shows for his wife, a habit stemming from his extensive experience as a video editor. Personally, he cherishes being present for the births of his children. Driven by the finality of life, he strives not to take time for granted. His colleagues describe him as "the most not serious, serious guy," and he hopes to meet his great-grandchildren someday. Matthew cares deeply about healthcare and animal welfare, and his personal mottos are "It sucks? Do it." and "You've got more in ya!"

Henry Jones has been a dedicated PMI and Phoenix Chapter member since 2019. Prompted by a SharePoint Management volunteer position on the PMI Phoenix Chapter site, Henry found an opportunity that perfectly matched his skills and interests. Since then, he has been actively involved in new user onboarding, account setup, and creating sites and functionalities in Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Teams. His contributions extend to working closely with department leaders on technology-related tasks and attending significant Chapter events, like the PMI Fusion Event in Glendale in late 2024. What Henry finds most rewarding about volunteering is the people he works with and the continuous education and learning opportunities. Henry encourages new members and those considering volunteer work to join, highlighting the chance to serve and share talents across various departments, including leadership, technology, marketing, membership enrollment, education, and training.

Beyond his professional and volunteer commitments, Henry has a range of personal interests and talents. He enjoys photograph and taking pictures here in Phoenix and just about any place he travels; he loves music and tinkers with various instruments and home recording software. Additionally, he writes fiction in the action, adventure, and dramatic genres. His favorite destination is the Hawaiian Islands, and he has a guilty pleasure for attending live concerts, including the AZ Jazz Fest and 80-90’s pop group performances. Henry is passionate about his faith, which has deepened over the years, and he actively participates in two men’s Bible discussion groups. He is also an avid supporter of his favorite sports teams: the Buckeyes, Browns, Cavs, and Guardians.

Rachel Gersten has been an active member of PMI for a little over a year and a half, joining as a volunteer in July 2023 after earning her PMP certification. Encouraged by Bob Gates and Marissa Akins, who recognized her potential, Rachel quickly took on roles such as Facilitator for the Study Group. Her volunteer activities this year have been diverse, including leading Saturday Study Group sessions, speaking at ASU about the PMP application process, participating as a DEI Committee Member and rolling out DEI strategies, and serving as the Sponsorship Chair for the 2024 AZ PM Summit. Rachel finds great reward in empowering the next generation of project managers and values the recognition she receives from those who have passed their exams, knowing she played a part in their journey.

Rachel’s passion for education and mentorship is deeply rooted in her family background of teachers. She believes in making a positive impact and encourages new members to volunteer, highlighting the opportunity to meet amazing people and make a difference. Outside of her volunteer work, Rachel has a hidden talent for synchronized swimming, enjoys relaxing on Caribbean beaches, creating delicious dishes in her kitchen, and indulging in cool ranch Doritos while binge-watching a funny TV show.

Her business philosophy is, “If you don’t ask; you don’t get,” emphasizes the importance of communication. Inspired by her mom, grandmas, and aunts, Rachel is driven by a desire to continually grow. Her colleagues would describe her as a cheerleader who always sees the positive and sets people up for success. Rachel’s personal motto, “Assume positive intent,” reflects her optimistic and supportive nature.

Ali Conquest has been a dedicated member of PMI since March 20, 2023, and began volunteering shortly after, with her first event in Flagstaff taking place in August 2023. Ali’s involvement in the Programs and CORE (Community Outreach and Remote Engagement) teams has been instrumental in organizing various events, including the 45th anniversary celebration. Encouraged by Derick Brownell, Programs Board Director, and Cynthia Ford, CORE Board Director, to volunteer, Ali has hosted multiple events throughout the year, fostering a sense of community and providing educational and networking opportunities in Northern Arizona. Ali finds great reward in creating these connections and highly recommends volunteering to new members, emphasizing the invaluable relationships and experiences gained.

Passionate about the outdoors and climate change, Ali enjoys destinations with beautiful views, solitude, and good snacks. Her guilty pleasure is true crime, and she is driven by the fulfillment of accomplishing tasks, whether it’s climbing a mountain or completing a project milestone. Ali’s mentors include Derick Brownell and Stacey Matthiessen, who have provided significant guidance and support throughout her career transitions. Ali’s proudest moments include passing the PMP exam and finishing Ironman Arizona. Known for being dedicated, loyal, and reliable, Ali’s personal motto is, “You are capable of doing anything you WANT to do.”

Garet Burns joined PMI in 2006 and began volunteering in February 2023, motivated by a desire to engage more deeply with the community during a period between projects. This year, Garet has actively participated in several volunteer activities, including supporting Pat’s Run, contributing to the One Warm Coat initiative, and reviewing applicants for the Fresh Start Women’s Foundation Scholarship Program, where she helped select four deserving candidates. Her efforts have been particularly rewarding as she has witnessed firsthand the gratitude of community members, especially when donating hygiene kits and winter clothing to those in need. Garet encourages new members and those considering volunteer work for the Chapter to get involved, emphasizing that even a small investment of time can make a significant impact.

Outside of her volunteer work, Garet enjoys traveling with her family to Europe and indulging in the Food Network or HGTV. She believes in continuous learning through books, courses, and others’ experiences, with recent book favorites being “The Covenant of Water” by Abraham Verghese and “A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles. She admires her mother for her patience and love in raising six children. Her proudest career moment was attaining her PMP through self-study, and personally, she cherishes obtaining her MBA. Garet aspires to retire to travel more. Known for her supportiveness and humor, Garet is driven by the ability to learn new skills and adapt to challenges. Her personal motto is “Character counts.”

Farnaz Bagheri has been a PMI member for over a year and began volunteering in September 2023, shortly after earning her PMP certification. Encouraged by Chapter Board Directors Aaron Jang and Marissa Akins, she decided to get involved and quickly became an invaluable member of the Professional Development team. This year, Farnaz has facilitated study groups, served on the DEI committee, and played a key role in organizing the 2024 Arizona PM Summit. She finds her volunteer work immensely fulfilling, especially the chance to engage with people from diverse backgrounds, hear their stories, and learn how they found their way to project management.

Farnaz encourages new members, and anyone interested in volunteering with the Chapter to jump in, highlighting the rich learning experiences and supportive environment that allows members to grow and experiment without the pressures of high-stakes projects. Outside of her volunteer commitments, Farnaz enjoys traveling. Her favorite destination is Washington, D.C., for its rich history, art, and architecture. She also loves treating herself to cookie dough ice cream and binge-watching Friends. She is deeply passionate about justice and addressing inequality, and her business philosophy emphasizes embracing mistakes and focusing on solutions rather than problems. Inspired by her family and her husband’s support and resilience, Farnaz is committed to personal and professional growth, guided by her motto: “Hope is an act.”
  

PMI Phoenix Chapter Announces Board Chair Impact Award to Aaron Jang!

We are thrilled to announce that Aaron Jang has been honored with the prestigious Board Chair Impact Award! This award recognizes Aaron's remarkable contributions and dedication to the PMI Phoenix Chapter.

Over the past year, Aaron has been instrumental in expanding our chapter's offerings. He has grown our Study Group Program to include the PMI CAPM and PMI-ACP certifications, broadening the professional development opportunities for our members. In addition, Aaron served as a pivotal member of the Arizona Project Management Summit Speaker Committee, providing invaluable guidance to the team on setting up the Keynote Panel and supporting the committee throughout.

Beyond these accomplishments, Aaron has launched numerous additional Professional Development Classes, empowering our community to advance their skills and expertise. He has also collaborated cross-functionally with the Academic Outreach team, organizing impactful events with Arizona State University.
