Arizona Chapter

Formation & Background

The PMI Arizona Chapter was created through the unification of two long-standing and highly respected chapters of the Project Management Institute: the PMI Phoenix Chapter and the PMI Tucson Chapter. This consolidation brought together decades of leadership, volunteer service, and professional excellence to form a single, statewide organization dedicated to advancing the profession of project management across Arizona.

PMI Phoenix Chapter Legacy (Founded 1978)

The PMI Phoenix Chapter was chartered in 1978 as the 29th PMI Chapter in the United States, establishing Arizona as an early contributor to the global project management movement. Over nearly five decades, the chapter grew to serve 2,800+ members, representing professionals from:

  • Industry
  • Consulting
  • Government
  • Academia

More than two-thirds of its membership earned the Project Management Professional (PMP®) credential, reflecting a strong culture of certification and professional rigor. Geographically, the chapter served the greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area, as well as Flagstaff, Prescott, Yuma, Kingman, more than 20 Tribal Nations, and numerous surrounding communities. On September 29, 2000, the chapter was incorporated as a 501(c)(6) nonprofit corporation, further strengthening its governance and operational maturity.

PMI Tucson Chapter Legacy (Founded 1997)

The PMI Tucson Chapter was formed in March 1997 to better serve project management professionals in Southern Arizona. Its mission centered on setting a regional standard of excellence by:

  • Promoting project management certification and continuous professional development
  • Maintaining an active professional forum for collaboration and knowledge exchange
  • Building public recognition for project management leadership
  • Developing a state-of-the-art network of project management knowledge
  • Providing leadership through public service and community engagement

Like Phoenix, Tucson’s membership represented a cross-section of industry, consulting, government, and academia.

Unification into a Statewide Chapter Recognizing the opportunity to:

  • Align resources
  • Expand volunteer leadership capacity
  • Increase member value

  • Support PMI’s evolving global strategy

The Phoenix and Tucson Chapters formally unified on January 1, 2026 to establish the PMI Arizona Chapter. The newly formed chapter serves professionals across the entire state through three geographic branches:

  • Northern Arizona – including Flagstaff, Prescott, and surrounding communities
  • Central Arizona – Phoenix metropolitan region
  • Southern Arizona – Tucson, Yuma, Sierra Vista, and surrounding area.

Purpose & Impact The PMI Arizona Chapter now represents a consolidated, statewide professional community dedicated to:
